What der, die and das mean

In German, every noun has a grammatical gender. In the nominative singular, its definite article is der if it is masculine, die if it is feminine and das if it is neuter. Learn the article together with the word: not just Tisch, but der Tisch.

English has no grammatical gender for things, so the translation gives you no clue. Die Sonne (“the sun”) is feminine, while der Mond (“the moon”) is masculine. Gender doesn’t always follow a person’s sex either: das Mädchen, “the girl”, is neuter because it contains the diminutive suffix -chen.

GenderExampleMeaning
Masculineder Tischthe table
Femininedie Sonnethe sun
Neuterdas Buchthe book
Plural, any genderdie Bücherthe books

In the nominative plural, die is used for all three genders. So seeing die Bücher doesn’t mean that Buch is feminine.

Suffixes that help you remember the gender

Some word-formation suffixes give especially useful clues:

  • -ung: die Wohnung (the flat).
  • -heit: die Sicherheit (safety).
  • -keit: die Möglichkeit (the possibility).
  • -schaft: die Freundschaft (friendship).
  • -chen and -lein: das Mädchen and das Büchlein (the little book).

What matters is spotting the suffix, not blindly looking at the last letters. Der Sprung (“the jump”) ends in the letters “ung”, but it doesn’t contain the suffix that forms Wohnung. Likewise, der Kuchen (“the cake”) is not a diminutive in -chen.

Many words ending in -e are feminine, but there are common exceptions: der Name and das Ende. Use these tendencies to organise your vocabulary, and check the article whenever you learn a new word.

A routine for learning whole words

  1. Write the word with its article and plural: das Buch – die Bücher.
  2. Add a short sentence: Das Buch ist interessant. (“The book is interesting”).
  3. Cover the article and try to recall it before checking.
  4. Go back to the words you got wrong and review them on different days.

The article changes with the case

Don’t confuse gender with the form of the article. Der Tisch is still masculine when it appears as den Tisch or dem Tisch. The form changes because of its role in the sentence.

Compare Der Hund schläft. (“The dog is sleeping”) with Ich sehe den Hund. (“I see the dog”). To understand that change, continue with the guide to Akkusativ and Dativ.

  4. der Tisch: it is masculine; it's best to memorise the pair.
